Choosing between an inground trampoline and an above-ground trampoline? The difference goes beyond looks. Your choice affects how much work the installation takes, how easily children can get on and off, and whether you can move it to a different spot in the garden later.
In short: choose an inground trampoline if you want a low step-in height and a trampoline that blends in naturally with your garden. Choose an above-ground trampoline if you want to skip the digging, be up and bouncing sooner, and value flexibility.
An inground trampoline sits on short legs on the grass, over a pit. This keeps the step-in height to just about 20 cm. A ground-level trampoline goes one step further: it sits completely flush with the ground. An above-ground trampoline stands fully above the surface and doesn't need to be dug in.
This is the first question to answer. An above-ground trampoline is easier to take with you when you move house, or to shift if your garden layout changes. An inground trampoline stays where it is, and that's perfectly fine, as long as you're already sure the spot is right.
Important: you can't dig in an above-ground trampoline at a later stage. The frame, leg length and ventilation are designed completely differently. Converting the other way round isn't possible either. Unsure about the location? Then an above-ground trampoline is the safer choice.
An inground trampoline is closer to the ground, which means young children can get on and off by themselves. If you do go for an above-ground trampoline, make sure you add a trampoline ladder. The difference in everyday use is bigger than you might expect.
More than you might think. You dig a pit exactly according to the instructions, ensure proper drainage and place the frame perfectly level. Not every type of ground is suitable, and it can be wise to get a landscaper involved. An above-ground trampoline? That's usually ready within a few hours.
Not necessarily. An above-ground trampoline comes with a safety net as standard. With an inground trampoline, you choose whether to add a net, safety tiles or no accessory at all. The safest option isn't automatically a particular type, but the right combination of type and accessories. Also read our tips on safe trampoline bouncing.
| Inground trampoline | Above-ground trampoline | |
|---|---|---|
| Step-in height | Low (~20 cm) | Higher (ladder recommended) |
| Installation | Digging required | Ready within a few hours |
| Relocating | Not possible | Possible |
| Appearance | Subtle, blends into the garden | More visible |
| Budget | Higher (incl. digging) | Often more affordable |
